NVivo 12 Windows

This topic describes how you can perform an unattended installation and activation of NVivo 12 Windows using the Windows Installer (MSI) engine.

In this topic

Overview

You can use the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) engine to perform an unattended installation of. An unattended installation is undertaken entirely from the command line and requires no user interaction.

The MSI file and application files can be extracted from theinstaller using one of the commands below. This creates a number of folders containing application files along with the NVivo 12.msi file.

  • For 32-bit installations, use: NVivo12.x86.exe /a

  • For 64-bit installations, use: NVivo12.x64.exe /a

If you require a silent installation (no messages or windows are displayed), you may need to change the command line options.

If you intend to install NVivo using the Windows Installer (MSI) engine, you will need to ensure that the prerequisites for NVivo are installed before you install NVivo—you can download these components from theSoftware download locationslisted below. Instructions for installing these prerequisite components are provided.

You can also optionally install the supplementary add-on for NVivo, NCapture. This is a browser extension that allows users to gather material from the web.

You can also optionally install the Windows-Mac Project Converter plug-in to enable users to convert projects between NVivo 12 Windows and NVivo 12 Mac format. If you do not install this plug-in, it will be automatically downloaded and installed the first time the user converts a project between NVivo for Windows and NVivo for Mac formats.

NOTE If users work with audio and video files, you may need to install additional codecs—for more information, refer to theNVivo 12 Help.

Activating via command line and XML

NVivo 12 can be activated via the Internet using a command line script and an activation XML file. A valid license key is required for this process.

The following script needs to be run on each computer you intend to activate:

nvivo -i license key -a activation filename [-u

This command performs a product initialization using the specified license key and the activation details in the specified activation file.

NOTE

Nvivo Torrent Download

  • Enter the license key in the following format: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

  • If you want to use NVivo as a 14 day trial, you can use the '-i' parameter without a license key.

  • If your organization's proxy server requires your activation request to be authenticated, you may optionally specify a username, password and/or domain. This information is not retained by QSR.

  • After the activation command is run, NVivo sends an ENTER key to return focus to the command window. You can use the optional parameter -skr to suppress this. You will need to do this if you have scripted the activation command to run in a minimized window.

  • Angle brackets < > indicate that the enclosed element is mandatory. You need to replace the text within the angle brackets with relevant information. Do not type the angle brackets themselves in the command line.

  • Square brackets [ ] indicate that the enclosed element is optional. Do not type the square brackets themselves in the command line.

Replacing a license key via command line

Enterprise licenses (formerly known as site licenses) enable multiple users in your organization to work with NVivo for a period of time.

If your site has been issued multiple NVivo license keys and you encounter problems activating a particular license key—for example, if a license key has expired or has been activated too many times—then, you can use a different license key instead. For more information about replacing a license key via the command line, refer to Replacing a license.

Deactivating via command line

NVivo 12 can be deactivated via the Internet using a command line script. The following script needs to be run on each computer you want to deactivate:

nvivo -deactivate [-u

NOTE

  • If your organization’s proxy server requires your deactivation request to be authenticated, you may optionally specify a username, password and/or domain. This information is not retained by QSR International.

Removing NVivo 12 Windows using a command line

We recommend that you deactivate NVivo before uninstalling the software so that you can reuse the license key on another computer.

To remove the NVivo software using a command line, run the following command:

msiexec /x {28ADDB93-754C-4AB8-AAE5-851DBCBA2C1E} /qb

NOTE If the NCapture browser extension was also installed, you can remove it from the Control Panel.

Removing prerequisite components

NVivo relies on a number of other components to run, and if they are not already present when you install the software using the setup wizard, NVivo will install them for you. However, when NVivo is uninstalled, these components remain on the workstation.

These components can be removed individually from the Control Panel using Uninstall a program.

You should only uninstall them if you are certain that they are not utilized by other programs on your computer.

The components to be removed, in order, are:

  • Microsoft SQL Server Express LocalDB 2014
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2

Before you can use NVivo, it must be activated. Activation registers individual NVivo installations against licenses (or 'seats', for enterprise customers) that have been assigned from within the myNVivo portal. Assign or unassign licenses or subscriptions

NOTE Your institution may have installed and activated NVivo on its computers for you. If you have user rights to the computers then you can run NVivo on them.

Each end-user who has been assigned an NVivo license/seat can activate NVivo on two computers:

  • Windows and enterprise licenses—end-users can activate NVivo on 2 Windows machines, 2 Mac machines, or 1 of each.

  • Mac licenses—end-users can activate NVivo on 2 Mac only machines.

Activation is automatic, using the user's myNVivo profile (see myNVivo).

NOTE If you purchased NVivo then by default you are assigned a license. If required, you can assign your license to another user for them to activate on their computer. Assign or unassign licenses or subscriptions

NOTE If you want to transfer an NVivo license from one person to another, you must deactivate the original user's installations to make the license available to the new user. Deactivate NVivo

Removing table view in microsoft word for mac 2016. NOTE Activation requires internet connection. If you are unable to use online activation, please contact support.

How you activate NVivo depends on your situation:

  • Activate a new installation—you have a new installation of NVivo on your computer.
  • Replace a trial license—you already have NVivo installed and have started a 14-day trial. Now, you have bought a perpetual or student license, or been assigned a license or seat under another person's/organization's account, and need to activate NVivo to use the new license.
  • Reactivate NVivo to use a new license—you already have NVivo installed with a license other than a trial. Now, you want to use a different license—e.g. to stop using a personal license and use your organization's license, or vice versa.

Activate a new installation

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.
  2. Start NVivo.
  3. In the Activate NVivo dialog box, click Log into myNVivo and enter your myNVivo profile login details. myNVivo
    • If there are multiple accounts associated with your myNVivo profile, select the account with the NVivo license you want to use (if there are multiple valid licenses in the account you will need to select the license as well). Click Activate.
    • If you are eligible to trial NVivo you can activate the trial by clicking Activate Trial.

    Activation is automatic.

  4. When you open NVivo after activation, set up your default NVivo user profile in the User Profile dialog box.
NOTE: This is a local profile just for this installation of NVivo (on this computer) and is used to identify work you do in the app. It is not your myNVivo profile.

Replace a trial license

If you have been trialing NVivo and have now purchased a full license or been assigned a license or seat from another person or organization, the next time you open NVivo you will be prompted to activate the full license. Follow the prompts and click Activate .

NOTE If you want to replace a license that is not a trial, use the instructions below Reactivate NVivo to use a new license.

If you bypass activation prompts and continue to run NVivo in trial mode, you can still activate to use the full license, from within NVivo:

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.
  2. On the Welcome screen, click File, then Product Info / Manage License / Replace License.
  3. When prompted, log into myNVivo.
  4. If prompted, select the account with the license that you want to use, (if there are multiple valid licenses in the account you will need to select the license as well).

  5. Click to activate.
    Activation is automatic.

Reactivate NVivo to use a new license

Follow these instructions in order to deactivate a current NVivo license and reactivate to use a new license.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.
  2. Close any NVivo projects you have open.
  3. Click the File tab, Product Info, Manage License and then Deactivate License.
  4. Confirm deactivation, and close NVivo.
  5. Restart NVivo.

Most likely you are still logged in with the profile you were logged in with before deactivition.

    • If the license you want to use is in an account you have access to under this profile, continue below to activate.
    • If the license you want to use belongs to an account under another profile, log out of myNVivo, start NVivo again and log in with the profile you want to use.
  6. In the dropdown, select the account with the license that you want to use and click Activate. (If you have logged in with a new profile there may not be a choice of accounts—in this case just click Activate.)

    Activation is automatic.

Deactivate NVivo

You may want to deactivate the NVivo license on a particular computer. For example, if you get a new computer then you should deactivate the NVivo license on the old computer before installing and activating on the new one.

Similarly, if your NVivo license/seat has been reassigned to another person, you must deactivate your installation(s) to make the license available to the new user.

NOTE If someone has left your organization with activated NVivo installations and you can't contact them to deactivate themselves, contact support.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.
  2. Close any NVivo projects you have open.
  3. Click the File tab, Product Info, Manage License and then Deactivate License.
  4. Confirm deactivation, and close NVivo.
